When to go?

The season Spring and Autumn are the most preferred by the visitor. Summer is hot and wet in Kathmandu. Winter, while mainly clear during the days can have a lot of fog hanging in the Valley in the mornings, impeding visibility and flights. Outside the Kathmandu Valley, the fog is not such an issue at this time.
Nepal has four distinct seasons:

  • SPRING from late February to late April - is warming up and mostly fine weather. As the dry months accumulate, the dust etc builds up in Kathmandu and visibility can be poor from there at this time of year (noticeably more so at the latter end of spring)
  • SUMMER, from May to September - the monsoon season is hot and humid with rain almost everyday. During this season, trekking in most of Nepal is difficult and uncomfortable, the trails being muddy and infested with leeches and access to trail heads is subject to delays.
  • AUTUMN, from October to mid December, is cool with clear skies and is the most popular season for trekking.
  • In WINTER, from Mid - December to mid February, it is cold at night, with chances of fog in the early morning, but generally clearing to fine days and with very little chance of rain.

One of the largest determinants of weather is the altitude. Hence the winter weather is warmer and milder on the plains. While in summer the lowlands might be next to unbearable, at this time the mountains will be nice.
Precipitation outside the monsoon season:

  • It usually does not rain for more that one or two days during the entire autumn and the winter season, although the highest chance of winter rain would come in mid to late January.
  • In the winter, the mountains are covered with snow including some high hills. It very rarely snows in the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara.
